Irish Whiskey

Triple-distilled, unpeated, and home to a style found nowhere else on earth.

Irish whiskey is whiskey distilled and matured on the island of Ireland for at least three years in wooden casks. Most of it is triple-distilled and unpeated — smoother and fruitier than typical Scotch — and Ireland's signature category, single pot still, marries malted and unmalted barley into a creamy, peppery style no other country makes.

Irish Whiskey 101

What makes it Irish?

By law, Irish whiskey must be distilled and matured on the island of Ireland for at least three years in wooden casks. In practice, most of it is triple-distilled and made without peat — which is why it drinks smoother and fruitier than typical Scotch.

Its crown jewel is single pot still — a legally protected style made from malted and unmalted barley that exists nowhere else. The unmalted 'green' barley is what gives Redbreast and the Spot range their creamy texture and peppery bite.

Answered by Niall Connolly · The Atlantic Seat

i.Is Irish whiskey smoother than Scotch?

Usually, yes. Most Irish whiskey is triple-distilled and unpeated, so it leans fruity and creamy where Scotch can lean smoky and oily. Premium bottles like Redbreast 21 have every bit of Scotch's depth — just a different accent.

ii.What is single pot still whiskey?

Ireland's native style: a mash of malted and unmalted barley (at least 30% of each), distilled in copper pot stills at a single distillery. The unmalted barley gives it a creamy, oily texture and a signature peppery spice.

iii. What's the best Irish whiskey right now?

Our highest-scored Irish bottle is Redbreast 21 at 96/100 (around $290). For value, Green Spot at about $65 delivers the pot-still signature at a weeknight price.

iv.Where should a beginner start?

Redbreast 12 or Green Spot — both show what makes Irish whiskey distinct without the collector's price tag. Move up to Redbreast 21 when you want the full statement.
