Bushmills is the whiskey of Ireland's northern coast — triple-distilled malt from a single Co. Antrim site, matured largely in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks and released as both blends (Original, Black Bush) and age-stated single malts (10, 16, 21). The famous '1608' is a licence date, not a founding date: the distillery company dates to 1784, and 'oldest licensed distillery in the world' leans hard on heritage marketing. What matters in the glass is the house style — soft, orchard-fruity, honeyed triple-distilled spirit given weight by sherry-cask maturation. Owned by Proximo / José Cuervo since 2014-15, it has invested heavily and pushed its single-malt and Causeway Collection tiers upmarket.

Bushmills — The Story
Triple-distilled, since (at least) 1784.
The Old Bushmills Distillery sits on the River Bush in Co. Antrim, minutes from the Giant's Causeway. The business was formally established in 1784, and across two centuries it became the standard-bearer for a lighter, triple-distilled northern style of Irish whiskey — built on malt spirit and, in its best expressions, generous Oloroso sherry-cask maturation. It's one of the few Irish producers releasing both everyday blends and a full ladder of age-stated single malts.
Ownership has moved often. After Irish Distillers and then Pernod Ricard, Bushmills was bought by Diageo in 2005. In late 2014 Diageo swapped the brand to Mexico's Casa Cuervo (owner of José Cuervo), taking Diageo's Don Julio stake plus cash; the deal closed in early 2015, and Bushmills now runs through Cuervo's Proximo Spirits arm. Since then the owners have invested heavily in the site and leaned into premium single-malt and annual Causeway Collection tiers under master blender Alex Thomas and master distiller Colum Egan.
One myth, corrected: the 'world's oldest licensed distillery, 1608' line refers to a royal licence to distil in the Bushmills area — there's no evidence of continuous distilling from that date, and the Bushmills company wasn't founded until 1784. Read it as 'roots trace to a 1608 licence,' never 'founded 1608.'

Who owns Bushmills?
Proximo Spirits, the US arm of Mexico's Casa Cuervo (the José Cuervo company). Diageo swapped the brand to Cuervo in 2014, completing in early 2015 — so Bushmills has been Cuervo/Proximo-owned for about a decade.
Is it really the oldest distillery (the 1608 claim)?
Sort of, with an asterisk. '1608' refers to a royal licence to distil in the Bushmills area, which is why the brand calls itself the 'world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery.' But the company dates to 1784 and there's no proof of continuous distilling from 1608 — heritage marketing, not a literal founding date.
Which bottle should I buy first?
For value and character, Black Bush (~$37) — a high-malt, sherry-influenced blend that punches above its price. If you want single malt, the 10 Year (~$45) is the reference. Original (~$21) is a fine mixer but skippable if you're tasting neat.
Original vs Black Bush?
Both are blends, but Black Bush has a much higher malt proportion and leans on Oloroso sherry casks, giving richer dried-fruit and spice depth. Original is lighter, grain-forward and built for mixing; Black Bush is the one you can comfortably sip neat.
