Teeling Distillery
Dublin's whiskey came home.
In 2015 Teeling fired up the first new whiskey distillery in Dublin city in over 125 years, ending a long silence in a place that once had dozens. Run by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling — sons of Cooley founder John Teeling — the house made its name on a fearless approach to wood: rum, Sauternes, Cabernet, Madeira and Portuguese oak all pass through its warehouses. That mix of Dublin revival, family lineage and cask innovation made Teeling the World's Most Awarded Irish Whiskey, crowned by its 24-Year single malt being named World's Best Single Malt in 2019. Bacardi, a longtime stakeholder, took full ownership in June 2026, with the founders staying on as advisors.

Teeling — The Story
The first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years.
The Teeling name goes back to Walter Teeling, who ran a Dublin distillery in 1782, but the modern story runs through Cooley. John Teeling founded Cooley in 1987 and rebuilt Irish whiskey stock for decades before selling it to Beam in 2011. His sons Jack and Stephen launched the Teeling Whiskey Company in 2012, and in 2015 opened a working distillery in the Liberties — the first new whiskey distillery in Dublin city in over 125 years.
The ownership arc has been gradual: Bacardi took a minority stake in 2017, became majority shareholder in 2022, and completed a buyout to 100% ownership in June 2026, with Jack and Stephen staying on as advisors. Across that decade the brand more than doubled, reached 80+ export markets, and racked up 650+ international awards — becoming the World's Most Awarded Irish Whiskey.
One myth, corrected: not everything in a Teeling bottle was distilled at the 2015 Dublin distillery. Early expressions were built largely from mature stock the family kept from the Cooley era while the Newmarket distillate matured — standard for a young distillery. Teeling's own Dublin spirit now anchors the Single Pot Still and Blackpitts and is steadily entering the range.

Who owns Teeling now?
As of June 2026, Teeling is wholly owned by Bacardi, the family-owned group behind Bacardi rum, Patrón and Grey Goose. Founders Jack and Stephen Teeling remain as advisors. Bacardi built to full ownership over a decade (minority 2017 → majority 2022 → 100% 2026).
Is it actually distilled in Dublin?
Increasingly, yes — the Newmarket distillery has run since 2015 and its own Dublin distillate now anchors the Single Pot Still and Blackpitts. Older and entry bottlings drew on mature stock sourced from the family's former Cooley distillery while the Dublin spirit matured.
Which bottle should I try first?
For most people the Single Malt (~$54) is the sweet spot — a five-cask marriage that best shows the house style. For the cheapest honest introduction, Small Batch (~$35) is the rum-finished gateway; for Teeling's own Dublin pot-still character, the Single Pot Still (~$63).
