Blended Irish Whiskey

Blended Irish whiskey is the category that built Ireland's global reputation and still accounts for the overwhelming majority of every bottle exported. By law it marries two or more of Ireland's three whiskey types — pot still, malt and grain — all distilled and aged 3+ years on the island, and the blender's craft is in the ratio. Where single pot still leans spicy and oily and single malt leans rich and fruity, a blend rounds those characters against light, sweet grain whiskey for an approachable, honeyed, gently spiced pour that's smoother than either component alone. It's the style that made Irish whiskey a byword for easy-drinking warmth.

The 101
The style that carried Irish whiskey.
Blended Irish whiskey is the commercial engine of the whole category. When Irish whiskey collapsed in the 20th century, it was the smooth, affordable blend — Jameson above all — that survived, rebuilt and eventually powered the modern renaissance. Blending solved two problems at once: it made whiskey lighter and more approachable for a mass audience, and it let distillers stretch limited stocks of expensive pot still and malt whiskey with cheaper grain spirit.
A blend is built by marrying at least two of Ireland's three whiskey types. Grain whiskey — distilled in a continuous column still — is light and smooth, forming the base; into it the blender folds pot still and/or malt whiskey from copper pot stills, which carry the weight, spice and fruit. Ratio is everything. Made chiefly by Irish Distillers / Midleton (Jameson, Powers, Midleton Very Rare), Bushmills (Black Bush) and Teeling.
Blended vs single pot still vs single malt?
'Single pot still' and 'single malt' each come from one distillery and one whiskey type. A blend mixes two or more of Ireland's three types — nearly always adding light grain whiskey to soften and stretch it. Blends are generally smoother, sweeter and cheaper; the single styles are more intense and characterful.
Is Jameson blended?
Yes. Standard Jameson is a blend of triple-distilled pot still whiskey and grain whiskey, both made at Midleton in Co. Cork. It's the world's best-selling Irish whiskey and the definitive light, honeyed blended style.
Which should I try first?
Start with standard Jameson (~$27) for the baseline smooth-and-sweet profile, then jump to Jameson Black Barrel (~$40) or Bushmills Black Bush (~$33) to taste what more pot still or sherried malt does to a blend — the best on-ramp before a splurge like Midleton Very Rare.
Is it always triple-distilled?
Triple distillation is the famous Irish tradition and is used for the big blends (Jameson, Powers, Midleton), but it's a convention, not a legal requirement — the GI technical file doesn't mandate it. Some Irish whiskey is double-distilled, so 'triple-distilled' is a house style, not a category rule.
