COUNTRY GUIDE · SCOTLAND
Scotch Whisky
Five regions, one word — from Speyside sherry to Islay smoke.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks. Single malts come from one distillery's malted barley and pot stills; the five whisky regions run from Speyside's honeyed elegance to Islay's maritime peat — the widest stylistic range in whisky.

SCOTCH WHISKY 101
What makes it Scotch?
By law, Scotch must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak, from water and malted barley, and bottled at 40% or above. 'Single malt' means one distillery, malted barley only, pot stills.
The regions are the map: Speyside for orchard fruit and sherry, Islay for peat and brine, the Highlands for range, Campbeltown for funk, the Lowlands for gentleness. Learn two regions and you can navigate any whisky list on earth.

i.Islay vs Speyside — what's the difference?
Islay malts are peated — smoke, iodine, sea air. Speyside malts are typically unpeated — honey, orchard fruit and sherry. They're the two poles of Scotch; most drinkers eventually love both.
ii.What's the best Scotch whisky right now?
Among our reviews, Lagavulin 16 and Macallan 18 Sherry Oak are tied at 92/100 — one smoky, one sherried. Start with whichever pole of flavour pulls you.
iii.Is older Scotch always better?
No — older means longer in oak, which adds depth but can also flatten distillery character. Many 10–16 year bottlings beat their 25-year siblings on flavour per dollar.
iv.Where should a beginner start?
Unpeated: GlenDronach 12 or a Speyside classic. Smoke-curious: Talisker 10, then Lagavulin 16 when you're ready for the real thing.
