Founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill at Carbost, Talisker is the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye — a maritime malt of white pepper, brine and wood smoke shaped by worm tubs and U-bend lye pipes on its five stills. Owned by Diageo (in the Distillers Company fold since 1925), it fronts the 'Made by the Sea' line and feeds the smoky heart of Johnnie Walker.

TALISKER — THE STORY
Skye's only still for 190 years.
Brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill founded Talisker in 1830 at Carbost on Loch Harport, naming it for Talisker House across the island — and for most of two centuries it was the only distillery Skye had. Robert Louis Stevenson canonised it in 1880 as one of 'the king o' drinks,' and pepper-and-brine has been the island's signature ever since.
The character is made by plumbing as much as peat: five stills run their spirit through U-bend lye pipes and outdoor worm tubs, a Victorian arrangement that keeps the whisky heavier and spicier where modern condensers would polish it clean. Absorbed into the Distillers Company in 1925 and rebuilt after the 1960 stillhouse fire, Talisker sits today with Diageo — the face of its 'Made by the Sea' line and the smoky spine of Johnnie Walker.

i.Who owns Talisker?
Diageo. Talisker has been in the Distillers Company family since 1925, and DCL's descendants became Diageo in the 1997 Guinness–Grand Metropolitan merger. It anchors the company's 'Made by the Sea' campaign and remains the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye.
ii.Which Talisker should I buy first?
The 10 (~$78, our 89) is the whole house style in one bottle. Want it louder? 57° North (~$110) is the cask-strength cut. Gentler on the wallet, Storm (~$55) trades a little polish for extra smoke.
iii.Why does Talisker taste peppery?
Mostly the hardware. The wash stills send spirit through U-bend lye pipes with purifiers, and all five stills condense in old-style outdoor worm tubs — a slower, copper-poor path that leaves heavier, spicier compounds in the glass. Medium-peated malt (commonly cited around 18–22 ppm) and shoreline warehouses do the rest; that black-pepper catch in the finish is the house signature.
iv.Was Talisker really Skye's only distillery?
For about 190 years, yes. From 1830 until Torabhaig opened in 2017, Talisker was the Isle of Skye's lone licensed distillery — which is why 'Skye single malt' and 'Talisker' read as synonyms through most of whisky history.
v.Can we send you our whiskey?
Yes — and it's the only way to earn a Superior Rating. Distilleries are welcome to send bottles for the full panel: two per expression, one decanted into blind samples for the three of us, one sealed on file.
