Made by the sea, since 1830.
Talisker has stood at Carbost on the tidal shore of Loch Harport since 1830, when the MacAskill brothers built it beneath the Cuillin hills. For most of two centuries it was the Isle of Skye's only distillery — a malt made where Atlantic weather writes the tasting notes.
Today it anchors Diageo's coastal malts and feeds the smoky heart of Johnnie Walker. A quirk of law: Skye is an island, but the Scotch Whisky Regulations recognise no 'Islands' region — so this most maritime of malts is legally a Highland single malt. The 10, at 45.8% since the Classic Malts era, remains the definitive statement.
Ask a bartender to describe Talisker 10 and you'll hear the same three words in some order — smoke, salt, pepper. No other core-range malt tastes so much like its own postcode.

At $70–$80, emphatically — few malts deliver this much character at the price. It's the rare bottle that excites beginners and never bores the rest of us.
ii. Is Talisker 10 peaty?
Moderately. It's clearly smoky — more than any Speyside — but well short of Islay's heavy hitters. The smoke reads as bonfire-by-the-sea, not iodine.
iii. Talisker 10 vs Caol Ila 12 — which should I buy?
They tie at 89/100 for different reasons: Talisker for muscle — pepper, brine and 45.8% — Caol Ila for elegance and ease. First smoky bottle? Caol Ila. Only smoky bottle? Talisker.
iv. Why is Talisker called a Highland malt if it's from an island?
Scotch law recognises five whisky regions, and 'Islands' isn't one of them — Skye falls inside the Highland region. Island malt by geography, Highland by statute; we call it what it tastes like: maritime.
v. What does 'made by the sea' actually mean?
Talisker sits on Loch Harport's tidal shore and matures stock in coastal warehouses. Whether the sea truly gets into the cask is debated — the brine on the palate isn't.
vi. Is it natural colour and non-chill filtered?
No on both counts — like most Diageo core bottlings it's chill filtered, and colour adjustment is standard. The 45.8% strength carries the flavour through regardless.
