Islay single malt is whisky from Scotland's southernmost Hebridean island, where barley is traditionally dried over peat fires — infusing the spirit with smoke, iodine, tar and sea air. Long maritime aging adds brine and polish. It is whisky's most divisive style, and its most devoted following.

ISLAY MALT 101
Why peat?
Islay had no coal and few trees — but bottomless peat bogs. Drying malted barley over peat fires was simply how the island made whisky, and the smoke soaked in. What began as necessity became the most recognisable flavour in Scotch.
Nine distilleries work the island today, from Ardbeg's cult intensity to Bunnahabhain's unpeated outlier. Most classics cluster on the south coast — Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg within three miles of each other.

i.Islay malt vs other Scotch — what's the difference?
Peat. Mainland malts are mostly unpeated (fruit, honey, sherry); Islay malts are defined by smoke, iodine and sea air. The underlying make is the same — the barley's drying fire changes everything.
ii.Are all Islay whiskies smoky?
Almost — but not all. Bunnahabhain is largely unpeated and Bruichladdich's core range too; they trade smoke for brine and sherry. The south-coast trio (Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg) is peak peat.
iii.What's the best Islay single malt?
Our top score is Lagavulin 16 at 92/100, with Ardbeg Uigeadail tied for drinkers who want cask strength. Laphroaig 10 wins on value at around $55.
iv.Where should I start with peat?
Ease in with Caol Ila 12 — smoke without the iodine punch. If you'd rather jump in the deep end, Laphroaig 10 will tell you within one glass whether Islay is your island.
