GlenDronach is the Highland distillery that built its name on deep sherry-cask maturation — principally Spanish Oloroso and intensely sweet Pedro Ximénez casks — producing single malts loaded with dried fig, dark chocolate, treacle and Christmas-cake spice. Where many distilleries 'finish' in sherry for months, GlenDronach matures for the full term, and does so at real age: 12, 15, 18 and 21 years anchor the core range. That combination of full-term sherry richness and honest age statements made it a benchmark 'sherry bomb' and a value reference against pricier rivals. It's Highland — not Speyside — owned by Brown-Forman and blended by Dr Rachel Barrie.

GLENDRONACH — THE STORY
A Highland survival story, in sherry.
Founded in 1826 near Forgue in rural Aberdeenshire, GlenDronach was among the first distilleries to go legitimate under the 1823 Excise Act. Its history reads like a Highland survival story — a fire in 1837, bankruptcy, a rebuild in 1852, four decades under the Grant family, then silence from 1996 to 2002, the period that gives the 'Revival' 15 its name.
The modern legend was cemented after 2008, when a wave of age-stated, full-term sherry-matured bottlings turned an obscure Highland name into a critical darling and a favourite among value-hunting Macallan drinkers. Brown-Forman acquired the distillery in 2016, and under master blender Dr Rachel Barrie the dark, dried-fruit house style has been preserved rather than diluted.
One myth, corrected: GlenDronach is often mislabelled 'Speyside' because of its Aberdeenshire location and sherry-forward style — but it sits within the Highland whisky region and is officially a Highland single malt.

Who owns GlenDronach?
Brown-Forman, the American company behind Jack Daniel's, which completed its acquisition in June 2016 alongside BenRiach and Glenglassaugh. Master blending across all three is led by Dr Rachel Barrie.
What's a 'sherry bomb'?
A single malt matured predominantly or entirely in ex-sherry casks — here Oloroso and sweet Pedro Ximénez — giving dried fig, raisin, dark chocolate, treacle and spice rather than lighter vanilla. GlenDronach is a definitive example because it matures for the full term in sherry wood, not a short finish.
Which bottle should I buy first?
The 12 'Original' (~$69) — the flagship and truest, most affordable expression of the house sherry style. If you already love sherried whisky, jump to Revival 15 (~$119) for more depth and proof.
Is it Speyside or Highland?
Highland. GlenDronach sits near Forgue in Aberdeenshire within the Highland whisky region; despite a sherry-forward style and some 'Speyside' retailer tags, the distillery classifies it as a Highland single malt.
