SCOTLAND · ISLAY · SINGLE MALT REVIEW
Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt
Iodine, smoke, no apologies.
Ten years in bourbon oak beside the Atlantic — iodine, tar rope and salt spray at full volume.
The most medicinal of the classic Islay malts: barley smoked over Laphroaig's own floor-malted peat, then aged ten years in ex-bourbon oak in seafront warehouses. Iodine, tar and wood smoke over a surprising seam of vanilla — the whisky its own distillery says you'll love or hate.

THE DECISION | LAPHROAIG 10
The medicinal Islay benchmark still earns its reputation.
Laphroaig 10 is iodine, seaweed, tar, vanilla and smoke at full volume. It is not the gentlest first Scotch, but around $50 it remains one of peated whisky's clearest value plays.
I Origin
LAPHROAIG 10 — STORY & ORIGIN
Peat cut from its own moss.
Laphroaig has sat on Islay's south shore since 1815, a mile along the coast from Lagavulin. It still runs its own floor maltings, smoking barley over peat cut from the distillery's own moss — the source of its famous iodine bite.
Today it is the flagship Islay malt of Suntory Global Spirits, and the 10 has carried the Prince of Wales's Royal Warrant since 1994. Ten years in ex-bourbon oak in seafront warehouses turn hot smoke into tar, salt and unexpected vanilla.
Laphroaig leans into the divide — “love it or hate it” — and the whisky earns the slogan: no classic malt is more medicinal, and none is easier to pick out of a blind lineup.

IV How to Drink It
HOW TO DRINK LAPHROAIG 10
“Laphroaig 10, neat — water on the side.”
Order it as the last dram of the night — nothing delicate survives after it. And if you mix it, make it count: it's the definitive float for a Penicillin.
NEAT FIRST
Pour it neat into a tulip glass and give it five minutes — the antiseptic edge settles into smoke.
A TEASPOON OF WATER
Water flips it sweeter — vanilla and salted caramel step out from behind the smoke.
THE PENICILLIN FLOAT
A quarter-ounce floated over a Penicillin is the classic bartender's move. Never crushed ice, ever.
THE SERVE
FIG. 02 — THE SERVE, DRESSED FOR THE EVENING

VERDICT · LAPHROAIG 10 REVIEW
The loudest welcome in Scotch.
Iodine, tar and sea spray over bourbon-cask vanilla — unmistakable, uncompromising and still one of the best-value benchmarks in whisky. It's not a diplomat. That's the point.

LAPHROAIG 10 · FAQ
Questions, answered.
Six things drinkers most often ask us about Laphroaig 10 at the bar.
Answered by Niall Connolly · The Atlantic Seat
i. Is Laphroaig 10 worth it?
Yes — at $50–$60 it's the best-value benchmark in peated Scotch. Above $70, wait for a sale or weigh it against Caol Ila 12 and other Islay standards before paying up.
ii. Why does Laphroaig taste like medicine?
Its barley is smoked over peat cut from the distillery's own moss, unusually rich in the phenols that read as iodine and antiseptic. It's a feature, not a flaw.
iii. Laphroaig 10 vs Lagavulin 16 — which is better?
Lagavulin 16 (92/100) is older, rounder and more polished; Laphroaig 10 (91/100) is sharper, brinier and roughly thirty dollars cheaper. Refinement vs. raw character — we keep both.
iv. Is Laphroaig 10 a good first Scotch?
Only if you already know you like smoke. Most newcomers should start with Caol Ila 12 or an unpeated Highland malt, then come back for this.
v. What strength is Laphroaig 10 in the US?
US bottles are 43% ABV (86 proof); some other markets get a 40% bottling. Same ten-year ex-bourbon maturation either way.
vi. Is it natural colour and non-chill filtered?
No — the standard 10 is chill filtered and coloured. If that matters to you, Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength delivers the same DNA unfiltered at batch proof.
