BUNNAHABHAIN 12 — STORY & ORIGIN
The gentle giant at the river's mouth.
Bunnahabhain — Gaelic for 'mouth of the river' — was raised in 1881 where the Margadale meets the Sound of Islay, a village built from scratch on the island's remote north-east shore. The stillhouse looks across the strait at the Paps of Jura.
In the 1960s the house malt went unpeated, and the 2010 relaunch made the modern promise explicit: 46.3%, non-chill filtered, natural colour. Bourbon and sherry casks do the talking instead of smoke.
It's the island's great contrarian: moored on the same shore as the peat giants, Bunnahabhain proves Islay's brine can carry a dram all by itself.
