LAGAVULIN 8 — STORY & ORIGIN
The birthday dram that refused to leave.
Lagavulin sits on Islay's south coast, beside Lagavulin Bay and the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle. In 2016 — the distillery's 200th year — it released an 8-year-old as a limited anniversary bottling, a nod to the 'exceptionally fine' eight-year-old Lagavulin that Victorian chronicler Alfred Barnard tasted on his 1886 visit.
Drinkers refused to let it go, and the 8 earned a permanent place in the core range. Same heavily peated malt, same famously slow stills — but bottled at a higher 48% and eight years young, it shows the house smoke before the sherried polish settles in.
Young Lagavulin is not lesser Lagavulin — it is the same slow-distilled smoke, served rawer: ash, brine and grilled citrus with the volume two notches higher.

Yes — at $64–$75 it's one of the best-value peated malts from a famous name. You get Lagavulin's signature smoke at a higher 48%, for roughly $20–$30 less than the 16.
ii. Lagavulin 8 vs Lagavulin 16 — which should I buy?
Buy the 16 for round, sherried, after-dinner polish; buy the 8 for brighter, ashier, higher-proof smoke and better value. Peat lovers usually end up owning both.
iii. Why did Lagavulin release an 8-year-old?
It was created for the distillery's 200th anniversary in 2016, honouring the 'exceptionally fine' 8-year-old that chronicler Alfred Barnard tasted in 1886. Demand kept it in the core range.
iv. Is Lagavulin 8 very smoky?
Yes — it uses the same heavily peated malt as the 16, and youth plus 48% make the smoke ashier and more immediate, with less sherry sweetness to cushion it.
