RED SPOT — STORY & ORIGIN
The oldest mark on the ledger.
Mitchell & Son, Dublin wine merchants since 1805, marked maturing casks with dabs of coloured paint to track intended age — and red, the story goes, denoted the longest-slept whiskey of the range, around fifteen years. Like all Spot lore, the colour code is heritage marketing as much as documented ledger fact; the age statement on the label is what's verifiable.
Red Spot disappeared in the 1960s with the collapse of Irish whiskey bonding. In November 2018 Mitchell & Son and Midleton brought it back — the first Red Spot in roughly 50 years, and the range's 15-year flagship.
Produced at Midleton in County Cork from malted and unmalted barley, matured a minimum of fifteen years in ex-bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts and Sicilian Marsala wine casks, and bottled at 46% without chill-filtration.

ii. Red Spot vs Yellow Spot — what's the difference?
Three more years and a different wine cask: Red swaps Yellow's Malaga for Sicilian Marsala and adds age, trading honeyed stone fruit for darker cooked fruit, leather and a longer finish. Both are 46% Midleton single pot stills.
iii. What's a Marsala cask?
A cask that held Marsala, a fortified wine from Sicily. It's rarer in whiskey than sherry or port and lends Red Spot a ripe cooked-fruit sweetness — baked apple, cherry, fig — with a gently drying, winey edge.
iv. Is Red Spot finished or fully matured?
