BLUE SPOT — STORY & ORIGIN
The bonder's cask-strength comeback.
Blue Spot is a Mitchell & Son bottling — the Dublin wine merchants, trading since 1805, who bonded and matured Midleton spirit under their own marks. The story goes that maturing casks were daubed with coloured paint to track intended age — blue marking seven years. Charming as it is, that colour-code lore is heritage marketing as much as documented ledger fact; what's verifiable is the name and the seven-year age statement.
Blue Spot disappeared in the 1960s along with most of the range. In 2020 Mitchell & Son and Midleton revived it as the family's first cask-strength core bottling — non-chill-filtered, batch-variable strength, with Portuguese Madeira casks in the recipe.
Distilled at Midleton in County Cork and matured at least seven years in ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts and Madeira casks, then bottled at natural cask strength — roughly 58–59% depending on batch — with nothing added and nothing filtered out.
