I Origin
From the Distiller's Cottage to Midleton's crowning pot still.
Barry Crockett was born in the Distiller's Cottage on the Midleton grounds, where his father Max was master distiller. He apprenticed under his father and succeeded him in 1981, just as the new Midleton Distillery was being commissioned.
Across 47 years at Midleton he oversaw Jameson, Redbreast and Powers, and in 1984 created Midleton Very Rare itself. For his 2013 retirement, Irish Distillers gave him free rein to design a single pot still whiskey bearing his own name — the first time since John Jameson that one of their whiskeys was named for a master distiller.
Released in 2011 ahead of his departure, it became the first permanent single pot still in the Midleton range and its acknowledged pinnacle. Crockett built it around American oak — mostly first-fill ex-bourbon, with a small, deliberate portion matured in unseasoned virgin oak — for a polished, vanilla-and-oak signature all its own.

Vanilla and toasted oak lead, with cedar, lime zest and green orchard fruit — pear and green berries — behind. Acacia honey and a touch of cocoa develop slowly; a few drops of water tease out more fruit.

For a prestige single pot still, it's exceptional — a multiple-award-winner Whisky Advocate calls a 'mastery of American oak' with an 'eternal' finish. The caveat is price: at ~$300+ for a non-age-stated 46% whiskey, it's a splurge bought for elegance, prestige and the story rather than raw flavour-per-dollar.
ii. Barry Crockett vs Redbreast 21 — which should I get?
Both are ~$250–$300 prestige Midleton pot stills. Barry Crockett is all American oak — elegant, vanilla-and-citrus, refined; Redbreast 21 is deeply sherried — richer, darker, dried-fruit-forward, with a stated 21-year age. Choose oak-driven elegance or sherried depth.
iii. What makes it different from other Midleton pot stills?
The virgin, unseasoned American oak. Most Midleton pot stills use only ex-bourbon and sherry casks; Barry Crockett adds a small portion matured in new American oak, giving a distinctive polished-oak, vanilla-forward signature. It's also non-chill-filtered at 46%.
iv. Is it a blend?
No — it's a single pot still whiskey (malted and unmalted barley, one distillery). Some retailer listings wrongly call it a pot still/grain blend; that's an error. The blend it's confused with is Midleton Very Rare, a different, grain-containing product.
v. How old is the whiskey in it?
There's no age statement, but the components run roughly 10–25 years, with some whiskey around 25 years old. That extended age adds to the deep vanilla and polished-oak character.
