Philadelphia name, Kentucky muscle.
Rittenhouse takes its name from Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square and was born just after Repeal as a tribute to the Pennsylvania 'Monongahela' rye tradition. The style nearly died in the twentieth century; the name survived because Heaven Hill — America's largest family-owned distillery — kept bottling it through the long decades when rye didn't sell.
That stubbornness paid off. When the cocktail revival hit in the 2000s, bartenders needed a 100-proof rye that could punch through a Manhattan and cost little enough to pour every night — Rittenhouse was already there. Today it's distilled at Heaven Hill's Bernheim facility in Louisville under master distiller Conor O'Driscoll: still Bottled-in-Bond, still around $27, still the working benchmark of the American back bar.
