Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

The everyday rye, done right.

Michter's accessible single-barrel rye — baking spice, citrus and caramel at an easy 84.8 proof, from the most-admired name in American whiskey.

The workhorse of the Michter's rye range: a single-barrel Kentucky Straight Rye bottled one cask at a time at a gentle 84.8 proof. Where the 10 Year Rye is the special-occasion pour, US*1 is the versatile everyday bottle — clean, spicy and equally at home sipped neat or built into a Manhattan. Michter's has been named the world's most-admired whiskey three years running; this is its most affordable way in.

THE DECISION | MICHTER'S US*1 RYE

A polished rye workhorse, best when discounted.

US*1 Rye is clean, spicy and versatile, with the soft Michter's profile that makes it easy neat or in a Manhattan. The only real hesitation is price creep: it shines in the mid-$50s and gets harder to defend near SRP.

I Chapter One · Origin

A $245 name, revived in Kentucky.

The Michter's name traces back to a historic Pennsylvania distillery that went bankrupt in 1989. In 1997 Joseph Magliocco — who bought the dormant trademark for a famous $245 — revived the brand with the late whiskey veteran Dick Newman and rebuilt it in Kentucky. US*1 became the flagship core line, named for the 'US number one' barrels of the original.

Today Michter's distills and matures in Louisville, under master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson. US*1 Rye is drawn from single barrels and bottled at 84.8 proof, with the house's signature low barrel-entry proof and heavy attention to cooperage. In October 2025 Michter's was named the world's most-admired whiskey for the third year running — this rye is its most affordable way in.

II Chapter Two · On the Palate

Bright spice, clean and easy.

A textbook everyday rye — spice-forward but never hot, and endlessly mixable. Single-barrel, so expect slight bottle-to-bottle variation.

NOSE

Baking spice and orange peel lead, with vanilla, caramel and a faint rye-bread and dill note. Clean and inviting rather than deeply complex.

PALATE

Cinnamon and clove spice over butterscotch and bright citrus, with a light oak backbone. Medium-bodied and soft at 84.8 proof.

Warm and gently spicy, medium length and clean — fading on vanilla and black pepper. An easy, repeatable everyday pour.

EDITORIAL TRUST

A strong score with a price caveat.

The bottle earns its place for balance and usability, but the recommendation depends on what you pay. It is a better buy at street discount than at the new higher SRP.

III Chapter Three · Is It For You?

Who this bottle is really for.

FOR

You want a reliable everyday rye that overdelivers for the tier

You make cocktails — Manhattans, Sazeracs, whiskey sours

You love Michter's and want the affordable entry point

You prefer approachable, easy-drinking spice over heat

You want single-barrel character without a high price

You value a versatile bar-cart bottle over a trophy

IV Chapter Four · How to Drink It

Neat, on a rock, or in a Manhattan.

NEAT OR ONE CUBE

Soft enough to sip neat; a single large cube opens the citrus and rounds the spice.

BUILD A MANHATTAN

Its baking spice and steady 84.8 proof make it a natural base for stirred cocktails.

DON'T OVERTHINK IT

This is a workhorse, not a trophy — pour it freely and keep a bottle on the cart.

WANT MORE DEPTH?
For a special-occasion step up, the Michter's 10 Year Rye trades everyday value for serious age and complexity — at roughly four times the price. Keep US*1 for the cocktails.

Prices sampled July 2026 and vary widely — Michter's has raised US*1 SRP to about $76, but big retailers routinely discount to the mid-$50s, so shop around. Superior Whiskey earns a commission on ReserveBar purchases — our preferred retailer — but the BEST PRICE tag always reflects the lowest verified price. US*1 Rye is a common back-bar pour; most cocktail bars can serve it.

SUPERIOR WHISKEY'S AI TASTING GUIDE

Is US*1 Rye still worth it now that it's ~$76?

At mid-$50s street, an easy yes — a reliable, mixable single-barrel rye from the most-admired name in whiskey. At the new ~$76 SRP it's less obvious: Rittenhouse or Sazerac give you more proof and punch for cocktails at half the price, and the Michter's 10 Year Rye is the one to save up for. Buy US*1 when you catch it discounted — it's a workhorse, not a splurge.

US*1 Rye vs 10 Year Rye? Best rye under $40? Neat or in a Manhattan?

THE VERDICT

A dependable everyday rye — best bought on a discount.

Michter's US*1 Rye is exactly what a workhorse should be: clean, spice-forward and versatile, a single-barrel bottle that sips fine neat and shines in a Manhattan. It carries the polish of the most-admired name in American whiskey without the special-occasion price of the 10 Year. The catch is the creeping SRP — near $76, it's fighting cheaper, higher-proof ryes that mix just as well. Score it on the glass and it earns its 91; buy it on the shelf and you'll want to catch it in the mid-$50s. A genuine everyday pour — just shop around.

“The most-admired name in whiskey, at its most pour-freely price point.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Michter's US*1 Rye, answered.

Is Michter's US*1 Rye a single barrel?

Yes. Every bottle is drawn from one cask and bottled unblended, so there's slight variation from bottle to bottle. It's the core, everyday rye — not a limited or allocated release.

What proof is it?

84.8 proof, or 42.4% ABV — deliberately approachable, built for easy neat sipping and for cocktails.

Why has the price gone up?

Michter's has raised the US*1 core-range SRP to around $76. Street prices still run lower — often the mid-$50s at big retailers — so it pays to shop around rather than pay sticker.

US*1 Rye or the 10 Year Rye?

Different jobs. US*1 is the everyday, mixable workhorse; the 10 Year is a special-occasion, age-stated pour at roughly four times the price. Most people want US*1 for the bar cart and the 10 Year as a treat.

Is it good in cocktails?

Excellent — arguably its best use. The baking spice and steady 84.8 proof make it a natural for Manhattans, Sazeracs and whiskey sours.

Who makes it?

Michter's, based in Louisville, Kentucky and owned by Joseph Magliocco's Chatham Imports. Master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson oversee it. Michter's has been named the world's most-admired whiskey three years running.
