Wild Turkey's roots trace to Kentucky whiskey sold by the Austin Nichols company, and the name to a 1940 hunting trip where the bourbon was the hit of the camp. Austin Nichols bought the Lawrenceburg distillery outright in 1971, and today Wild Turkey is owned by the Campari Group.
The house is defined by legendary master distiller Jimmy Russell, who made 101 the standard — bold, higher-proof, full-flavored — and held that line through decades when mainstream bourbons went lighter. His son Eddie now shares the master distiller role.
