YOICHI 10 — STORY & ORIGIN
Masataka Taketsuru's stubborn northern dream.
In 1918, a young Masataka Taketsuru sailed to Scotland to learn whisky-making from the inside — apprenticing in Speyside and Campbeltown and returning with notebooks that would seed an industry. In 1934 he chose Yoichi, on Hokkaido's west coast, because it reminded him of Scotland.
The place shaped the spirit. Yoichi's warehouses sit yards from the Sea of Japan, and its pot stills are still heated by open coal fire — a method almost extinct anywhere in the world — giving the malt a toasty, flinty edge no steam coil can copy.
Yoichi 10 vanished in 2015, a casualty of the age-statement shortage. Its return in 2022 — the first aged Yoichi in seven years — was the clearest sign yet that Japanese whisky's lean years are ending.
