Nikka Yoichi Distillery
Coal fire and cold sea — the birthplace of Japanese whisky.
Yoichi is Nikka's original distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the Osaka-born chemist who trained in Scotland and is universally called the father of Japanese whisky. He chose remote Hokkaido precisely because its cold, damp, maritime climate reminded him of Scotland. Yoichi is famous for direct coal-fired distillation — one of the last distilleries on earth to heat its pot stills over burning coal, a demanding craft that yields a heavier, toastier spirit. The house style is robust, smoky and briny: peat, sea salt and dried fruit — the antithesis of the delicate Japanese-whisky stereotype.

YOICHI — THE STORY
The father of Japanese whisky went north.
Masataka Taketsuru sailed to Scotland in 1918, studied chemistry at Glasgow, apprenticed at working distilleries, and came home with a notebook of Scotch technique and a Scottish wife, Jessie 'Rita' Cowan. After helping build Japan's first distillery at Yamazaki, he broke away to make whisky his own way — and went north to Hokkaido, where the cold sea air, humidity and peat most closely mirrored Speyside and Islay. He founded his distillery at Yoichi in 1934.
To fund a distillery that couldn't legally sell whisky for years while it aged, Taketsuru pressed the region's apples into juice and cider — hence the original company name, Dai Nippon Kaju ('Great Japan Juice Co.'). Yoichi's stills were, and still are, heated by direct coal fire, an old Scottish method almost everyone else abandoned. Nikka kept it, and it became the signature of the robust, smoky Yoichi style.
One myth, corrected: 'Nikka vs Yoichi — two brands?' No. Nikka is the company (a contraction of the old juice firm's name); Yoichi is its founding distillery and the single malt made there. And the age-stated 10/12/15/20 vanished in 2015 not by choice, but because runaway demand drained aged stock — sending old bottles to multiples at auction.

Who owns Yoichi?
Yoichi is made by Nikka Whisky, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Asahi Group since 2001 (Asahi first took a majority stake in 1954). Nikka still operates as its own whisky company under the Asahi umbrella.
Nikka vs Yoichi — what's the difference?
Nikka is the parent company and brand; Yoichi is one of its two malt distilleries (the other is Miyagikyo) and the single malt made there. 'Nikka' comes from the founder's original juice company; 'Yoichi' is the Hokkaido town where it began in 1934.
Which Yoichi should I buy first?
The Yoichi Single Malt (NAS, ~$98) is the flagship and intended entry — smoky, briny, characterful. If you find it near list, the 10 Year (WWA 2024 Best Japanese Single Malt) is the step up. On a budget, Nikka From The Barrel delivers Yoichi's DNA in a blend for ~$55.
Why does coal-fired distillation matter?
Yoichi is one of the last distilleries to heat its pot stills directly over burning coal rather than steam. The intense, uneven heat needs a stoker shovelling coal by hand and yields a heavier, toastier, more robust spirit — central to Yoichi's signature style.
