NIKKA FROM THE BARREL — STORY & ORIGIN
Two distilleries, one unapologetic blend.
In 1918 Masataka Taketsuru sailed to Scotland to learn whisky-making; in 1934 he founded Nikka at Yoichi, on Hokkaido's cold coast. Fifty years on, in 1985, Nikka's blenders created From the Barrel — a whisky built to taste the way whisky tastes in the warehouse.
The recipe is pure Nikka: robust, coal-fired Yoichi malt, soft and estery Miyagikyo malt, and Coffey-still grain whisky. The married blend returns to used casks for months of integration, then is bottled at 51.4% with minimal dilution — literally ‘from the barrel’.
The squat square bottle became a cult object among bartenders, and in 2018 — the year it officially reached America — Whisky Advocate named it Whisky of the Year.
