NIKKA COFFEY GRAIN — STORY & ORIGIN
An 1830s still, kept alive in Sendai.
The Coffey still — patented by Irishman Aeneas Coffey in 1830 — is the machine that made blended whisky possible: a towering continuous still that runs day and night. Most distillers replaced theirs with modern column stills decades ago. Nikka never did.
Nikka imported its two Coffey stills in 1963 and moved them to the Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai in 1999. Deliberately old and deliberately inefficient, they leave flavour in the spirit that modern stills strip out — creamy corn sweetness, esters, texture.
For decades that spirit vanished into blends. In 2012 Nikka began bottling it straight, and Coffey Grain became a quiet cult: a Japanese whisky that drinks like dessert and prices like a weeknight.
