ARDBEG 10 — STORY & ORIGIN
The little bay of the big smoke.
Ardbeg — Gaelic for 'the little height' — has stood on Islay's wild south coast since 1815, a white-washed cluster between Lagavulin and the open Atlantic. It nearly died twice; the stills sat mostly silent through the 1980s and 90s.
Glenmorangie bought the ruin in 1997 and rebuilt it into a cult. The Ten, launched in 2000, set the modern template: heavily peated Port Ellen malt, ex-bourbon casks, 46%, no chill filtration — smoke first, but never smoke alone.
The secret is the purifier on the spirit still — a copper loop that keeps citrus and cream alive inside all that tar.

Emphatically — in the $50s it's arguably the best value in heavily peated malt. Even into the $70s it out-punches most rivals.
ii. How peaty is Ardbeg 10 really?
Very — the malt runs around 50ppm, among Islay's highest. But citrus and vanilla keep it vivid rather than brutal; it's loud, not crude.
iii. Ardbeg 10 vs Uigeadail — which should I buy?
The Ten (91/100) for pure, citric peat at an easier price; Uigeadail (92/100) for cask-strength depth and sherry fruit. Start with the Ten; graduate when you're ready.
iv. Why is Ardbeg 10 so pale?
First- and second-fill bourbon casks and no added colour — all the drama is in the smoke, not the tint.
v. Is it chill filtered or coloured?
No and no — 46%, non-chill filtered, natural colour. Expect a slight haze with water or cold; that's the good stuff.
