Buffalo Trace is the crown jewel of the Sazerac Company and the most decorated distillery in the world, with well over 1,000 awards and dozens of 'Distillery of the Year' titles since 2000. From one historic Frankfort campus it distills across four core recipes — low-rye #1, higher-rye #2, a wheated recipe and a rye mash — feeding a portfolio that runs from the humble flagship to Eagle Rare, Weller, Blanton's, E.H. Taylor, Sazerac Rye, the Antique Collection, and (via a Van Winkle joint venture) Pappy. It also claims to be the oldest continuously operating distillery in America. BUFFALO TRACE — THE STORY
The epicenter of allocation.
Buffalo Trace is the flagship of the Sazerac Company, the privately held New Orleans spirits house (Goldring family) that bought the historic Frankfort plant and rechristened it in 1999. The site's whiskey story is far older — distilling here traces to the late 1700s, and the distillery claims the title of oldest continuously operating distillery in America, having kept its stills legal through Prohibition on a medicinal permit. Today master distiller Harlen Wheatley oversees the deepest medal cabinet in the industry.
What sets it apart is scarcity. It is the epicenter of bourbon's allocation phenomenon: demand for Weller, Blanton's, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor and the annual Antique Collection vastly outstrips supply, so bottles are rationed and vanish from shelves — the gift shop famously sells one rotating allocated bottle per person per day. Secondary prices can run 5–10x sticker, though 2024–25 saw that froth finally cool as age-stated releases flooded in.
One myth, corrected: 'you can just buy Buffalo Trace at MSRP.' Two half-truths — the hype is aimed at the wrong bottles (Pappy and BTAC are near-impossible), while the excellent everyday flagship (~$30) and Eagle Rare 10 (~$45) are the point and genuinely gettable. And 'MSRP' for most of the range is a fiction: Weller, Blanton's and the Taylors almost always ring up above sticker.

Who owns Buffalo Trace?
The Sazerac Company, a privately held American spirits firm based in New Orleans and controlled by the Goldring family. Sazerac acquired the historic Frankfort distillery and gave it the Buffalo Trace name in 1999; Harlen Wheatley has been master distiller since 2005.
Why is everything so allocated?
Buffalo Trace's brands are made years in advance, and demand has outrun the aging supply for over a decade, so distributors ration bottles. That's why Weller, Blanton's, Eagle Rare and the Antique Collection disappear on release and command big secondary premiums — the distillery can't age bourbon fast enough.
Which bottle can I actually buy first?
Start with the flagship Buffalo Trace (~$30–35) — the most widely distributed, most-awarded value in the lineup. For a realistic step up, Eagle Rare 10 (~$45 MSRP) and Sazerac Rye (~$30) show up regularly.
Does Buffalo Trace make Pappy?
Yes — Pappy and Old Rip Van Winkle are distilled and bottled at Buffalo Trace under a joint venture with the Van Winkle family that began in 2002. Buffalo Trace makes the whiskey; the Van Winkles direct the brand.
Can we send you our whiskey?
Yes — and it's the only way to earn a Superior Rating. Distilleries are welcome to send bottles for the full panel: two per expression, one decanted into blind samples for the three of us, one sealed on file. All three seats taste it blind and the scores are averaged. Sending buys three honest opinions and nothing else — nobody sees a score before publication.
