Welsh Whisky
A young-again whisky country — light, fruity, cask-led single malt with a legally protected identity.
Welsh whisky has historic roots, but its modern revival began with Penderyn, which distilled from 2000 and released the first commercial Welsh whisky in over a century in 2004. Protected Single Malt Welsh Whisky is defined by Welsh production, 100% malted barley, Welsh water, at least three years' maturation in Wales, and a minimum 40% ABV. Compared with Scotch, the category is smaller, often lighter in body, and especially open to expressive wood finishing.

THE PRIMER
A whisky nation, revived
Welsh whisky has a broken history: commercial distilling existed in the late 1800s — including the Frongoch distillery — but production disappeared for most of the 20th century. Penderyn restarted the modern story in 2000 and bottled whisky in 2004, and the category won formal UK GI protection in 2023.
The style tends lighter and cleaner than many Scotch single malts, with fruit, sweetness and cask influence up front. The GI allows maturation in wooden casks rather than oak alone, so producers lean hard into finishes and wood strategy. South, North and West Wales all now have whisky stories — but no protected sub-appellations yet.
Is Welsh whisky legally protected?
Yes. 'Single Malt Welsh Whisky / Wisgi Cymreig Brag Sengl' is a UK Geographical Indication, registered in 2023.
Is Welsh whisky Scotch?
No. Scotch must be made in Scotland; Welsh whisky is made in Wales — and not every whisky made in Wales qualifies for the protected term.
