OMAR BOURBON CASK — STORY & ORIGIN
The state distillery's second act.
Nantou Distillery sits in the foothills of central Taiwan and belongs to the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation (TTL) — the state-run producer that traces back to the island's monopoly era. The site began life as a winery; whisky distillation arrived around 2008, on copper pot stills ordered from Forsyths of Scotland.
The first Omar single malts appeared in 2013, and the climate does the heavy lifting: subtropical heat matures spirit roughly three times faster than Scotland, at the cost of an 8–15% annual angel's share. Summers run so hot that the distillery pauses whisky runs entirely in the June–August months.
Bourbon Cask is Omar's calling card — fully matured in American-oak ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 46%, non-chill-filtered. And the winery past still shows: Nantou finishes whisky in its own lychee and plum fruit-wine casks, bottling the world's first lychee-liqueur-cask single malt in 2015.

In the mid-$60s, yes — a clean, characterful 46% single malt and the easiest way to taste Taiwan beyond Kavalan. Closer to $85 it faces stiff competition, so check your local price; in the UK it has often sold in the £55–£65 band.
ii. Omar Bourbon Cask vs Sherry Cask — which should I get?
Same distillery, two flavor families. Bourbon Cask is bright — vanilla, mandarin, mango; Sherry Cask is darker — raisin, chocolate, dried fruit — and scores slightly higher with us (89 vs 86). Start with whichever family you already drink.
iii. Who makes Omar whisky?
