Kavalan Distillery
In the humid foothills of Yilan, a single cask matured faster than anyone thought possible — and won the world.
Kavalan is Taiwan's first whisky distillery, built by the King Car Group in 2005 in subtropical Yilan County, where heat and humidity drive maturation at several times the Scottish rate — roughly one year doing the work of several, at the cost of a punishing angel's share. The house style is unabashedly cask-driven: American oak and, above all, wine and fortified-wine casks (Vinho, Oloroso, PX, Port), yielding dense, tropical-fruit-and-toffee malts with no age statement. Its Solist Vinho Barrique was crowned World's Best Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards. Kavalan matters because it collapsed the myth that great single malt needs decades and a cold climate.

KAVALAN — THE STORY
Taiwan beat Scotland at its own game.
King Car Group — a Taiwanese conglomerate spanning coffee, bottled water and health products, founded by Lee Tien-Tsai — broke ground on Kavalan in 2005 with no domestic whisky tradition to draw on, distilling its first spirit in 2006 and releasing the Classic in 2008. The rise was startlingly fast: a Kavalan beat Scotch and English rivals in a 2010 blind tasting in Leith, and in 2015 the Solist Vinho Barrique was named World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards — the first Taiwanese whisky to hold that title. The Solist Amontillado Sherry took World's Best Single Cask Single Malt a year later.
Kavalan's edge is climate, not age. Yilan's subtropical heat and humidity accelerate the spirit-wood interaction so dramatically that a young Kavalan drinks like a far older Scotch — with an angel's share many times higher than Speyside's. Founding master blender Ian Chang defined the cask-forward style before departing in early 2020; today the technical lead is Zerose Yang, Head of R&D and Senior Blender, named Master Distiller of the Year at the 2025 International Whisky Competition.
One myth, corrected: 'Kavalan won World's Best, so every Kavalan is a world-beater.' The awards name specific casks in specific years — the 2015 world's-best was one Solist Vinho Barrique cask, and Solist bottlings are single-cask, so no two are identical. The accessible Classic and Concertmaster are good, but they aren't the award-winners.

Who owns Kavalan?
The King Car Group, a privately held Taiwanese conglomerate founded by the Lee family, which built the distillery in Yilan in 2005. It has never changed hands. Founding master blender Ian Chang left in 2020; R&D and blending are now led by Zerose Yang.
Is Taiwanese whisky actually any good?
Yes — Kavalan is one of the most awarded single-malt makers in the world. Its Solist Vinho Barrique was named World's Best Single Malt (WWA 2015) and the Solist Amontillado Sherry took World's Best Single Cask (2016). The catch is price and scarcity — the top Solist bottlings are pricey and often allocated in the US.
Which Kavalan should I buy first?
Start with ex-Bourbon Oak (~$138) or Sherry Oak (~$165) at 46% for the real cask-driven house style, or the softer Classic (~$85) for the gentlest entry. Save the cask-strength Solist tier ($260 and up) for when you're ready to spend — each is a unique single cask.
Why does Kavalan mature so fast?
Yilan's subtropical heat and humidity make the spirit push deep into the oak and contract with temperature swings far more than in cool Scotland, extracting colour, flavour and tannin in a fraction of the time. The trade-off is a very high angel's share, which is why Kavalan releases mature-tasting malts with no age statement.
Can we send you our whiskey?
Yes — and it's the only way to earn a Superior Rating. Distilleries are welcome to send bottles for the full panel: two per expression, one decanted into blind samples for the three of us, one sealed on file. All three seats taste it blind and the scores are averaged. Sending buys three honest opinions and nothing else — nobody sees a score before publication.
